Craft ideas for kids: Yogurt pot telephone

Looking for craft ideas for kids?  Here’s an old school one!  I remember making these with my mum and bro when I was small (and there’s a top tip from Granny in this tutorial)…

Continuing the series of easy craft ideas for kids, I began to think back to what I enjoyed making (and playing with) as a kid.  A yogurt pot telephone was definitely one of the most memorable and fun!  Here’s a quick tutorial…

You will need:
– 2 empty (clean!) yogurt pots
– string
– washi tape / paint / paper and glue / stickers to decorate
– a skewer or nail
– a cork board / blue tac ball or similar to punch into
– 2 buttons

COST: pennies
AGE: toddlers & up
TIME: less than 10 minutes

How-to:

  1. Decorate the yogurt pots however you like (we painted them, then finished with washi tape).
  2. Use the skewer or nail to punch a hole in the bottom of each yogurt pot.
Put the cork board or ball of blue tac underneath the pot while you make the hole to stop it slipping and protect your work surface.
  3. Thread the string through the bottom of one pot and tie a button to it (this is Granny’s top tip: the button vibrates, improving the sound quality!).
  4. Repeat with the other pot.
  5. Pull the string taught (it won’t work otherwise) and have a secret chat!

Pickle was a bit dubious of the whole idea at first, but when I whispered to him through the pot phone and he realised he could hear me from far away, he grinned from ear to ear!

Have you ever made a yogurt pot phone?  What other crafts did you enjoy when you were a kid?

Looking for more craft ideas for kids?  Why not decorate a robot or make a cardboard box play house?

Ah yes, I think we used cans at school once we were a bit older. Much easier to punch holes in yogurt pots though! 😉

Love this 🙂 My son keeps asking to make things like Mister Maker (uh-ohhhh!!!!) and I was totally at a blank on how to make something fun. And of course washi tape makes it even better!

Pickle loves Mister Maker too (what is it about him?)! Really can’t get enough washi tape – I am going to ask Santa to fill my stocking with it. So glad I am not the only ADDICT… 😉

Come back and let me know how your pot phone making goes..?

Hi – lovely site, dying to try out some of the crafts with my two-year-old nephew – but what is washi tape? Never heard of it here in Ireland. Would masking tape or duct tape or Sellotape do as a substitute?

Thank you so much for visiting and commenting Roisin, I’m so pleased you like my little blog! 😀
Washi tape is a Japanese craft tape – here’s a more thorough explanation: http://www.omiyage.ca/what-is-washi-tape

You can also make your own – tutorial here: http://www.molliemakes.com/projects/tutorial-tuesday-homemade-washi-tape/

Honestly though we just used it here for decoration – you could use paint, wrapping paper or permanent marker pens instead (or even material, sequins, glitter – whatever you like)! 😉

P.S. So sorry for the delayed response – I have been away for a few days at the seaside!
